What is a forensic exam?
Medical forensic examinations, also known as “forensic exams,” help survivors of violent crimes like sexual assault and domestic violence. Specially trained Forensic Nurse Examiners (FNEs) at designated hospitals in most counties in Maryland conduct these exams.
Here is a video, cocreated with the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence and Luminus Health, about what you might expect if you were to seek care at a forensic program after a domestic violence assault. Please note that all facilities are different and the services offered will depend on the funding and staff available.
This material, cocreated with the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA), helps survivors of violent crimes like sexual assault and domestic violence understand the importance of medical forensic exams, how to access these exams, what to expect in terms of payment, and other important information.
