For Friends, Family, & Supporters
Abusive relationships are often complex and can be dangerous. While it may be tempting to tell someone what they should do, try to avoid giving advice or making decisions for them. Instead, support their autonomy, provide information, and let them know you’ll be there for them. This helps avoid unintentionally recreating the power and control they may already be experiencing in the abusive relationship.
If someone you care about may be experiencing abuse:
- Listen without judgment.
- Believe them.
- Respect their choices.
- Offer to help connect them with resources.
